ASPRS maintains a certification process for:
Applicants for professional certification must successfully complete two criteria to become certified:
- Pass a Peer-Review of experience and training, and
- Pass the Written Examination for the Specialty Area
Geospatial Intern status, previously known as provisional certification, is also available in all of the above areas for graduating seniors who have studied the geospatial sciences. Certification is easily completed once the experience component is fulfilled.
The Peer-Review process for new certification actions begins with the applicant submitting an application for Certified Photogrammetrist/Mapping Scientist OR Certified Technologist and four (4) reference forms from persons who are familiar with the applicant's work and responsibilities are completed. The ASPRS Certification Committee evaluates the application and personal references. Applicants who successfully complete the Peer-Review process are then eligible to take the examination.
The Examination is structured to emphasize the specialty area of the applicant. However, applicants should be aware that certification in any specialty also requires knowledge in the other two specialties, in addition to questions relating to surveying fundamentals, practice, ethics, and standards. A matrix illustrating the mix of questions by specialty has been prepared for applicant review.
The Guidelines include detailed information on the ASPRS certification process. Specific information for those seeking recertification, including the recertification application and personal reference forms, is also available.
