NOTE: THIS AWARD IS NO LONGER OFFERED.
[NOTE: this award consists of high resolution digital satellite imagery]
Purpose:
- To support remote sensing education and stimulate the development of applications of high-resolution digital satellite imagery for applied research by undergraduate or graduate students.
Eligibility:
- Full time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited college or university in the USA or Canada with image processing facilities appropriate for conducting the proposed work.
- Student member of ASPRS
Award:
- A grant of satellite imagery data up to 500 square kilometers (potential value of up to $20,000) and a certificate inscribed with the recipient’s name.
- This award is presented by the ASPRS Foundation with funding provided by The DigitalGlobe Foundation.
- DigitalGlobe will consider additional recipients per year based on the selection committee’s recommendation of an additional candidate’s merit.
Award Parameters:
Level of Imagery
The 500 square kilometers will be limited IKONOS and GeoEye-1 imagery from the DigitalGlobe archive and can be the following product types:
- IKONOS (1M Panchromatic 4M Multispectral or 1M Pansharpenend Multispectral)
- Geo
- Geo Stereo (US only)
- GeoProfessional (Ortho US only)
- GeoEye-1 (0.50-meter Panchromatic 2-meter Multispectral or 0.50-meter Pansharpenend Multispectral)
- Geo
- Geo Stereo (US only)
- GeoProfessional (Ortho US only)
Details about each product are available at www.digitalglobe.com
Size of Area
The award consists of an area of interest (AOI) of up to 500 square kilometers or separate smaller AOIs consisting of a total area less than or equal to 500 square kilometers.
Area of Interest
The area of interest chosen must be imagery that resides outside of DigitalGlobe’s Regional Affiliate Communication Cones. A DigitalGlobe Foundation representative can explain these areas.
New Collection
In addition to archive imagery applicants may apply for a new collection from IKONOS (11 x 11 km) or GeoEye-1 (15 x 15 km). Grant of a new collection may not compete with areas experiencing high demand for satellite resources or with DigitalGlobe Regional Affiliates. (Contact DigitalGlobe’s Customer Service Department for details.) At most one new collection will be granted per year conditioned upon satellite availability and a strong application.
Application:
In addition to the application form two letters of recommendation and official transcripts applicants must submit a brief proposal (three pages maximum) with the following information:
- Title: The title must describe the proposed research.
- Objective: Clearly state the purpose(s) of the research and the applications that it might address.
- Description of research study area and data needs: Provide a brief description of physical features of the study area. Consider the area to be covered and the type and amount of DigitalGlobe high-resolution satellite data needed for the study. Include information on geographic coverage (maps and coordinates). Note: Only DigitalGlobe IKONOS and GeoEye-1 data from the DigitalGlobe archive can be acquired under this award.
- Applicants are encouraged to use GeoFUSE ( http://geofuse.digitalglobe.com ) DigitalGlobe’s online search-and-discovery tool to check the archive data base for availability of archived data for the intended study or to confer with a representative of the DigitalGlobe Foundation.
- Application: Description of the possible applications that might result from this research and indicate possible users.
- Analysis procedure(s): Provide a brief description of the analysis approach indicating why high-resolution DigitalGlobe data is appropriate.
- Anticipated results: State the specific results desired in performing this research with the use of the high-resolution satellite data.
- Budget: Itemize the budget for the grant specifying DigitalGlobe products (up to 500 square kilometers) needed for the research. Note: Only DigitalGlobe products can be requested on your budget. Also identify other support for the research e.g. computer facilities (provided by the college/university); fieldwork (grant no. “yy” from the ABC Foundation”); manuscript preparation (personal funds); etc.
- List all courses workshops and other training/experience that demonstrate your capability to conduct proposed research. Obtain approval signature of student faculty adviser.
Award Selection:
- The selection committee from the ASPRS GIS Division and DigitalGlobe will evaluate each application and will apply equal weight to each element outlined above.
- The applicant who in the opinion of the majority of the committee has the highest overall ranking will be designated the recipient. More than one applicant may be selected.
Additional Information:
- Recipient must abide by the conditions set forth in DigitalGlobe’s “End-user License Agreement”. The recipient will also prepare a written report of the results of the project and submit it to ASPRS and to DigitalGlobe for possible company use. The report is due within one year of receipt of data.
- The recipient (or his/her representative) must attend presentation ceremony during the annual meeting to receive the award certificate.
