About the Position: The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) invites applications for a Faculty Lecturer position specializing in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. This is a 9-month position with optional summer teaching opportunities. We seek an innovative and dedicated educator to teach and develop courses in GIS and remote sensing and to support the department’s undergraduate and graduate B.S. and M.S. Atmospheric and Earth Science (AES) degree programs and GIS and remote sensing certificate programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in GIS, remote sensing, atmospheric science, Earth system science, geography, environmental science, geoscience, or a related field
- Knowledge of best practices for teaching, advising, and mentoring students in a higher education environment
- A commitment to excellence in undergraduate education and ongoing professional development to maintain currency in the field
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and remote sensing tools (e.g., ENVI, Google Earth Engine)
- Strong communication and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- One or more years of teaching experience in a higher education environment
- Experience with online or hybrid course development and delivery
- Familiarity with integrating GIS and remote sensing into environmental, atmospheric or earth system science research
Position Responsibilities:
- Teach existing undergraduate and graduate courses in GIS and remote sensing and Earth system sciences, including introductory and advanced topics, in a variety of course modalities (e.g., in person, online, and hybrid)
- Develop new courses and curriculum materials in the B.S. and M.S. AES Earth System Science (ESS) degree programs to address emerging trends and technologies in GIS and remote sensing using a variety of course modalities
- Support, advise and mentor students in the undergraduate and graduate B.S. and M.S. AES Earth System Science (ESS) degree programs and GIS and remote sensing certificate programs
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate GIS and remote sensing applications into broader atmospheric and earth science research and education initiatives
- Contribute to service activities within the department, university, and professional community

About the Department: The Department of Atmospheric and Earth Science is co-located with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Earth Science Branch in the National Space Science and Technology Center on the UAH campus. The department has a B.S. and M.S. program in AES with concentrations in Earth System Science (ESS) and Atmospheric Science (ATS) and an ATS Ph.D. program. The AES Department has 15 full-time faculty, over 20 affiliate faculty, and over 40 graduate and 90 undergraduate students. The Department is renowned for excellence in environmental and atmospheric research and education, offering undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for impactful careers in academia, government, and industry.
