Application Deadline - The
application deadline for the 2011 awards year is Wednesday, December 1st
2010.
ASPRS is pleased to offer fourteen awards totaling more than $50,000 in value. Available to both undergraduate and graduate student-members of ASPRS and others, these resources have been generated with the intention of advancing academic and professional goals within the fields of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and related disciplines. ASPRS recognizes that students are the future of these rapidly evolving fields and encourages all who are qualified to take advantage of these unique opportunities.
Awards are available in the form of cash, internship stipends, travel grants, and data. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, and you must be a member of ASPRS for many, but not all, awards. All awards ask that you submit samples of your work and research goals as part of your application, and that you submit a report to ASPRS outlining your research accomplishments upon completion of your grant period.
The Presentation of the Awards will take place at the “Installation of Officers and Awards Meeting” (or other times as indicated) held during the Annual (Spring) Conference of ASPRS

NEW
FOR 2011
The Francis H. Moffitt Memorial Scholarship is increased to $4,000, a $1,000 increase over the 2010 grant! This award is designed to encourage upper-division undergraduate and graduate level students to pursue a course of study in surveying or photogrammetry leading to a career in the geospatial mapping profession.
The Intergraph Scholarship in being sponsored this year by Z/I Imaging and is called the Z/I Imaging Scholarship. This $2,000 grant is designed to facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals adjudged to address new and innovative uses of signal processing, image processing techniques, and the application of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within the earth imaging industry.
The GeoEye Foundation has set new award parameters for the GeoEye Foundation Award for the Application of High-Resolution Digital Satellite Imagery. In addition to archive imagery, applicants may now apply for a new collection from IKONOS (11 x 11 km) or GeoEye-1 (15 x 15 km) (see details below). This unique data grant, which has a potential value of up to $20,000, is given in support of remote sensing education and to stimulate the development of applications of high-resolution digital satellite remote sensing data through the granting of GeoEye imagery for applied research by undergraduate or graduate students.
To encourage and commend college students who display
exceptional interest and ability in the theoretical aspects of
photogrammetry.

The award is administered by the
ASPRS
Foundation from funds provided by the estate of Mrs. Helen
Altenhofen as a memorial to her husband, Robert E. Altenhofen. A
past president of ASPRS, Mr. Robert Altenhofen was an outstanding
practitioner of photogrammetry and made notable contributions to the
mathematical aspects of the science.
Application
In addition to the
application form and two letters of recommendation, applicants must
submit the following items:
A 2-page statement by the applicant regarding plans for
continuing studies in theoretical photogrammetry.
Papers, research reports, or other items produced by the
applicant that indicate capability in these fields.
Official Academic transcripts-- including a separate list of
relevant courses taken with grades received.
Award Selection
The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the
committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated the
recipient.
Each item above will carry equal weight in the committee’s
consideration.
The purpose of this award is to encourage students who have an
exceptional interest in pursuing scientific research or education in
geospatial science or technology related to photogrammetry, remote
sensing, surveying and mapping to enter a professional field where
they can use the knowledge of their discipline to excel in their
profession.
Eligibility
The award is made to an undergraduate student currently enrolled
or intending to enroll in a college or university in the United
States for the purpose of pursuing a program of study to enter a
profession in which education in photogrammetry, remote sensing,
surveying and mapping and geospatial science or technology
disciplines will advance the value of those disciplines within that
profession.
Award
The award consists of a certificate, a check in the amount of
$1,000 and a one-year student membership (new or renewal) in the
society.
This award is presented by the
ASPRS
Foundation from funds donated by the Anson bequest and
contributions from the Society and the Potomac Region as a tribute
to Abe Anson's many contributions to the field of photogrammetry,
remote sensing, and long, dedicated service to the Society.
Application
A student or prospective student who wishes to be considered for the
award must submit an
application form and the following items:
A listing of courses taken, and/or to be taken in
photogrammetry, remote sensing, surveying and mapping, data
management, and geospatial science or technology disciplines
recognizing that instruction in remote sensing and geo sciences is
often taught in many disciplines.
An official transcript of all college or university level
courses completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic
ability. If the applicant is a prospective enrollee in a college or
university program, prior high school and post high school
transcripts are required.
Two letters of recommendation from faculty members or
professionals having knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities
(demonstrated or potential) as a professional in a field that uses
geospatial information.
A statement of work experience and listings that may include
internships, other forms of work experience, special projects,
papers, research reports, courses taught as a teaching assistant or
other items produced by the applicant that may support the
capabilities in this field. The statement should include the nature,
location and date(s) of the experience.
A statement, not to exceed 2 pages, detailing the
applicant’s plans for continuing studies towards becoming a
professional in a field that uses photogrammetry, remote sensing,
surveying and mapping, land and/or geospatial information science or
technology as a key part of its performance.
Award Selection
The Committee evaluates each application, applying equal weight
to each of the items listed above. The applicant who, in the
opinion of the majority of the Committee, has the highest overall
ranking is designated as the winner.
The purpose of the award is to reward top quality research and
publication by young students (under age 35 as of the
application deadline) at master’s or doctoral level and to encourage
researchers to use the ASPRS annual conference as a vehicle to
publish and present their findings.
Eligibility
Eligibility for this award is limited to papers describing civil
(non-military) applications of photogrammetry or remote sensing.
The applicant must be a student enrolled in a masters or
doctoral program at a recognized institution of higher education
chartered to award higher degrees.
The applicant must be the principal author of a paper accepted
for publication in the proceedings of the ASPRS annual conference.
Such papers may have multiple authors, but only the principal author
may apply.
The applicant must be a current student member of ASPRS.
Award
The award consists of a certificate and a grant of $2,000,
equally divided among the recipients if more than one is selected.
This amount can be varied at the request of BAE Systems.
Selected paper(s) will be published in Photogrammetric
Engineering & Remote Sensing (PE&RS), the official journal of
ASPRS.
The award is presented by the
ASPRS
Foundation with funding provided by BAE Systems.
Application
The applicant must submit an abstract for consideration for
presentation at the ASPRS annual conference on or before the
published deadline of the Call for Papers.
Once the abstract is accepted for presentation, the applicant
must submit the full paper for publication in the ASPRS conference
proceedings, together with the Application Form for the BAE Systems
Award. Both the paper and the application must be submitted on
or before the required deadline for receipt of the paper for the
conference proceedings, as published in the Instructions to
Authors. This is the only award with an alternate
deadline for application submittal.
Application consists of the standard Application Form and a
signed statement from the applicant’s faculty advisor that the
applicant is a student working on the stated degree and that the
published paper is primarily the work of the student. Applicants who
have made only minor contributions to the work, for example, when it
is primarily the work of their professor or research supervisor, are
not eligible for the award.
References and transcripts are not required.
Award Selection
The selection committee will review applications for eligibility
and will judge the submitted papers of eligible applicants, taking
into account the significance of the research or innovation, the
quality of scientific writing and other criteria that the panel may
see fit to include.
The selected applicant must agree to personally present the
paper at the Annual Conference.
John O. Behrens
Institute for Land Information (ILI) Memorial Scholarship
Purpose
The purpose of the award is to encourage those who have an
exceptional interest in pursuing scientific research or education in
geospatial science or technology or land information systems/records
to enter a professional field where they can use the knowledge of
this discipline to excel in their profession.
Eligibility
The Scholarship is made to an under-graduate student currently
enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in the
United States for the purpose of pursuing a program of study that
prepares him/her to enter a profession in which education in
geospatial science or land information disciplines will advance the
value of those disciplines within that profession.
Award
The award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of
$1,000 and a one year student membership (new or renewal) in the
Society.
Funds from the ILI have been donated to the
ASPRS
Foundation to support the John O. Behrens ILI memorial
Scholarship in recognition of Mr. Behrens' outstanding contributions
over the many years of his distinguished career

A student or prospective student who wishes to be considered for the

and geospatial information and technology and the academic grades
received.

(demonstrated or potential) as a professional in a field that uses

field that uses land and/or geospatial information as a key part of
its performance.

The purpose of the Award is to encourage and commend
college/university graduate students or post-doctoral researchers
who display exceptional interest, desire, ability, and aptitude in
the field of remote sensing or other related geospatial information
technologies, and who have a special interest in developing
practical uses of these technologies.
Eligibility
The Award is made to a graduate student (Masters or Ph.D. level)
currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university
in the United States or Canada, or a recently graduated (within
three years of graduation) post-doctoral researcher, who is pursuing
a program of study aimed at starting a professional career where
expertise is required in remote sensing or other related geospatial
information technologies.
Award
The award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of
$5,000 and a one-year student or associate
membership (new or renewal) in ASPRS.
The award is presented by the
ASPRS
Foundation from funds donated by students, associates,
colleagues, and friends of Robert Colwell, one of the world's most
respected leaders in remote sensing, a field that he stewarded from
the interpretation of World War II aerial photographs to the
advanced acquisition and analysis of many types of geospatial data
from military and civilian satellite programs.
Application
A current or beginning graduate student or post-doctoral researcher
who wishes to be considered for the award must submit an
application that includes the following items:
A listing of courses taken, and/or those to be taken, in remote
sensing or other related geospatial information technologies,
recognizing that instruction in remote sensing is often embedded in
courses taught in many different disciplines.
An official transcript of all college/university level courses
completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic ability.
A listing of internships, special projects or work experience;
technical papers, research reports or other documents; courses
taught as a lecturer or teaching assistant; and presentations made
that may support the applicant’s capabilities in this field.
Three letters of recommendation from
faculty members or professionals having knowledge of the applicant’s
capabilities (demonstrated or potential).
A statement, not to exceed 2 pages, detailing the applicant’s
educational and/or research goals that relate to the advancement of
remote sensing or other related geospatial information technologies
and the applications of these technologies
for mapping, monitoring and/or assessing land (including coastal)
resources and helping solve land resource planning or management
issues. (Note: Dr. Colwell’s research focused mostly on developing
and demonstrating practical uses of remote sensing.)
Award Selection
The Selection Committee evaluates each applicant, applying equal
weight to each of the five items listed above. The applicant who,
in the opinion of the majority of the Committee, has the highest
overall ranking is designated as the winner.
The internship provides the award winner with an opportunity to
carry out a small research project of his/her own choice, or to work
on an existing ERDAS project as part of a team.
Eligibility:
Graduate students of photogrammetry and remote sensing.
Student member of ASPRS
Award:
An eight-week internship for graduate students in
photogrammetry. The selected intern must be able to travel to the
ERDAS location to work with ERDAS personnel at facilities in
Atlanta, Georgia, or elsewhere, as determined by ERDAS. The
internship consists of a stipend of $2,500 plus an allowance for
travel and living expenses for the period of the internship.
This internship is presented by the
ASPRS
Foundation, with funding provided by ERDAS.
Application
In addition to the
application form and two letters of recommendation, applicants must
submit the following:
An official transcript from each college or university attended.

A proposal for the type of research the intern would like to
conduct. (The proposal should not exceed 1000 words and should state
the significance of the research, the proposed methodology, the

Note: Research topics should be in the general area of digital
photogrammetry and remote sensing. Topics in an area where ERDAS has
a commercial interest will be considered in a favorable light.
Award Selection
The selection committee will evaluate each application and apply
the weighting factors listed above.

committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated the
recipient.
Proposals will be evaluated by the ERDAS Internship Committee.
Final selection will be coordinated with ERDAS personnel.
To facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals directed
towards new and innovative uses of remote sensing data/techniques
that relate to the natural, cultural, or agricultural resources of
the Earth.
Eligibility:
Current or prospective graduate student members of ASPRS.
Award:
One year scholarship of $2,000 and a certificate.
This award is presented by ASPRS with funding provided by a
grant from the
ASPRS
Foundation, on behalf of individual and corporate contributions
to the Foundation in memory of William A. Fischer, a pioneer in the
use of remote sensing from space for the study of the planet Earth.

In addition to the

The GeoEye Foundation Award for the Application of High-Resolution Digital Satellite Imagery
NOTE: This award consists of high resolution digital satellite
imagery
Purpose
To support remote sensing education and stimulate the development of applications of high-resolution digital satellite imagery for applied research by undergraduate or graduate students.
Eligibility
Full time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited college or university in the USA or Canada with image processing facilities appropriate for conducting the proposed work.
Student member of ASPRS
Award
A grant of satellite imagery data up to 500 square kilometers (potential value of up to $20,000), and a certificate inscribed with the recipient’s name.
This award is presented by the ASPRS Foundation, with funding provided by The GeoEye Foundation.
GeoEye will consider additional recipients per year based on the selection committee’s recommendation of an additional candidate’s merit.

Size of Area The award consists of an area of interest (AOI) of up to 500 square kilometers or separate smaller AOIs consisting of a total area less than or equal to 500 square kilometers.
Area of Interest
The area of interest chosen must be imagery that resides outside of GeoEye’s Regional Affiliate Communication Cones. A GeoEye Foundation representative can explain these areas.
New Collection In addition to archive imagery, applicants may apply for a new collection from IKONOS (11 x 11 km) or GeoEye-1 (15 x 15 km). Grant of a new collection may not compete with areas experiencing high demand for satellite resources or with GeoEye Regional Affiliates. (Contact GeoEye's Customer Service Department for details.) At most, one new collection will be granted per year, conditioned upon satellite availability and a strong application.
Application
In addition to the application form, two letters of recommendation, and official transcripts, applicants must submit a brief proposal (three pages maximum) with the following information:
Title: The title must describe the proposed research.
Objective: Clearly state the purpose(s) of the research and the applications that it might address.
Description of research study area and data needs: Provide a brief description of physical features of the study area. Consider the area to be covered and the type and amount of GeoEye high-resolution satellite data needed for the study. Include information on geographic coverage (maps and coordinates). Note: Only GeoEye IKONOS and GeoEye-1 data from the GeoEye archive can be acquired under this award.
Applicants are encouraged to use GeoFUSE ( http://geofuse.geoeye.com ), GeoEye's online search-and-discovery tool, to check the archive data base for availability of archived data for the intended study or to confer with a representative of the GeoEye Foundation.
Application: Description of the possible applications that might result from this research and indicate possible users.
Analysis procedure(s): Provide a brief description of the analysis approach, indicating why high-resolution GeoEye data is appropriate.
Anticipated results: State the specific results desired in performing this research with the use of the high-resolution satellite data.
Budget: Itemize the budget for the grant, specifying GeoEye products (up to 500 square kilometers) needed for the research. Note: Only GeoEye products can be requested on your budget. Also identify other support for the research, e.g., computer facilities (provided by the college/university); fieldwork (grant no. “yy” from the ABC Foundation”); manuscript preparation (personal funds); etc.
List all courses, workshops, and other training/experience that demonstrate your capability to conduct proposed research. Obtain approval signature of student faculty adviser.
Award Selection
The selection committee from the ASPRS GIS Division and GeoEye will evaluate each application and will apply equal weight to each element outlined above.
The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated the recipient. More than one applicant may be selected.
Additional Information
Recipient must abide by the conditions set forth in GeoEye’s “End-user License Agreement”. The recipient will also prepare a written report of the results of the project and submit it to ASPRS and to GeoEye for possible company use. The report is due within one year of receipt of data.
The recipient (or his/her representative) must attend presentation ceremony during the annual meeting to receive the award certificate.
To facilitate research-related travel by outstanding graduate
students in remote sensing.
Such travel includes field investigations, agency visits,
participation in conferences, or any travel that enhances or
facilitates a graduate research program.

A grant of $1,500 and a hand-engrossed certificate.
This award is presented by ASPRS, with funding provided by a
grant from the
ASPRS
Foundation on behalf of individual and corporate contributions
to the Foundation in memory of Ta Liang, a skilled civil engineer,
an excellent teacher, and one of the world’s foremost air-photo
interpreters.

travel and how it fits into the applicant’s research and educational
objectives

particularly as they relate to community service.

The purpose of the award is to encourage upper-division
undergraduate and graduate-level college students to pursue a course

The award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of

renewal) in ASPRS.
This award is presented by ASPRS, MAPPS (the Management
Association of Private Photogrammetric Surveyors) and ACSM (the
American Congress on Surveying and Mapping) through the
ASPRS
Foundation from funds donated by students, associates,
colleagues, and friends of Frank Moffitt as a memorial to his
lifetime contributions to the photogrammetric surveying profession.

attributes that reflect Professor Moffitt’s career and
contributions.
The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and commend
college students who display exceptional interest, desire, ability,
and aptitude to enter the profession of surveying, mapping,
photogrammetry, or geospatial information and technology. In
addition, the Scholarship recognizes students who excel at an aspect
of the profession that Ken Osborn demonstrated so very well, that of
communications and collaboration.

The Scholarship is made to an under-graduate student
currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university
in the United States, who is pursuing a program of study in
preparation for entering the profession in the general area of
surveying, mapping, photogrammetry, or geospatial information and
technology.
Award
This annual Scholarship consists of a certificate and a check in
the amount of $2,000 and a one year student membership (new or
renewal) in the Society.
This award is presented by the
ASPRS
Foundation, with funding provided by donations from friends and
colleagues of Kenneth Osborn as a tribute to him.

Paul R. Wolf as a memorial to him. Recognized nationally and
internationally, Paul was an outstanding educator and practitioner
of Surveying, Mapping, and Photogrammetry and a great friend of the
Society. As author, teacher, and mentor, Paul made significant
educational and academic contributions to these fields.

Award Selection
The Committee evaluates each application,
applying equal weight to each of the items listed above. The applicant
who, in the opinion of the majority of the Committee, has the highest
overall ranking is designated as the winner.
The purpose of the award is to facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals adjudged to address new and innovative uses of signal processing, image processing techniques, and the application of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within the earth imaging industry. This award is presented by a grant from the ASPRS Foundation on behalf of corporate contributions to the Foundation by Z/I Imaging, a technology company that provides innovative solutions to the earth imaging industry.
Eligibility
The award is restricted to members of ASPRS. It is intended for a student who is currently pursuing graduate-level studies or who plans to enroll for graduate studies in a recognized college or university in the United States or elsewhere.
Award
The award consists of a one-year Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 and a certificate.
Application
In addition to the application form, and official transcripts, applicants must submit the following items:
A 2-page statement detailing applicant’s educational and career plans for continuing studies in photogrammetric applications.
Two completed letters of reference from faculty members who have knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities.
Technical papers, research reports, or other pertinent items produced by the applicant and indicating capabilities in this field may be submitted with the application, but are not required.

KODAK International Educational
Literature Award (KIELA)
Purpose
The purpose of the KIELA is to improve the quantity and quality
of literature in the recipient's library that deals with the mapping
sciences (i.e., photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, and related
disciplines). It is supported by a generous grant from KODAK and
administered by the
ASPRS
Foundation.
Eligibility
The KIELA is made to a university or educational institution
outside the USA.
Award
The award consists of the following:
$350 worth of books, manuals, or other literature published by
ASPRS;
A five-year free subscription to Photogrammetric Engineering
& Remote Sensing;
Proceedings of the annual conference for a five-year period;
One free registration to the conference where the award is to be
presented for a member of the institution to whom the award is
given.
The total value of this award is over $1,500. The materials are
to be placed in the libraries of the institutions receiving the
award.
The KIELA award has been augmented by a generous grant from the
Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) of the complete ESRI
Press Library collection, selected titles from the John Wiley and
Sons, Publishers, catalog, and selected Proceedings from the
Geospatial Information Technology Association (GITA) and the
Association of American Geographers (AAG).
The KIELA selection committee will evaluate each application.
The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the committee,
has the highest overall ranking will be designated as the recipient.
Additional Information
The recipient institution must place the publications and
materials in their institutional library and make them available to
students and researchers without limitation.
Any institution that receives the award is ineligible to apply
for the award again for a period of five years.

A fill and save version of the
application form can be accessed at

is not possible, the email transmission of the application will be
accepted as electronically “signing” the form.
Only letters of reference are acceptable but must be sent
directly to ASPRS by the person writing the reference, in
electronic format. A separate email is required for each
reference for each application
Copies of official transcripts must be submitted
electronically as part of the application. One original
official transcript (only) should be mailed directly to ASPRS by
the educational institution in a sealed envelope. That will serve to
verify the copies submitted.
Foreign language transcripts or documents must be translated by
an official translating agency

Applications for ASPRS scholarships and awards must include the
ASPRS application form unless indicated otherwise.
You may apply for more than one award, but you must submit a
separate application for each award requested.

Final note: Most awards call for
specific additional information, such as transcripts and applicant
statements, to complete the application. Please read the award
descriptions carefully for details. Incomplete applications
will be disqualified.
The awards will normally be made annually, as long as sufficient
funds are available. If the committee deems there are no applications of
sufficient quality to warrant approval, no award will be given that
year. Any application that does not comply in its entirety with the
terms stated above and/or with the terms of the specific award(s)
