John Russell Jensen, PhD, a Carolina Distinguished Professor in the Department
of Geography at the University of South Carolina, is the 2004 recipient of
the prestigious SAIC/Estes Memorial Teaching Award. This award was made during
the ASPRS 2004 Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado, May 23-27. Dr. Jensen
is a graduate of California State University, Brigham Young University, and
UCLA. He was instrumental in developing a new PhD program at the University
of South Carolina in Geographic Information Science specializing in remote
sensing, cartography and GIS. This program is now one of the most respected
in the nation. He has published over 100 articles dealing primarily with
remote sensing of the environment. He was a co-author of the ASPRS Manual
of Remote Sensing (1st and 2nd ed.) and Manual of Photographic Interpretation (2nd ed.) He has mentored 55 master’s students and 25 PhD students
in remote sensing. All of them are working in the field. He is a past president
of ASPRS.
Inaugurated in 2003, the ASPRS SAIC Estes Memorial Teaching Award is named in honor of Professor John E. ("Jack") Estes, teacher, mentor, scientist, and friend of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. This award is designed to recognize individual achievement in the promotion of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) technology and applications through educational efforts. Award recipients are chosen based on documented excellence in education, teaching, mentoring, and training.
The SAIC/Estes Memorial Teaching Award is presented by ASPRS with funding provided by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and consists of a presentation plaque and a cash award of $2,000.
