Dr. Edward Mikhail, head, Geomatics Engineering, Purdue University, has been selected as an Honorary Member of ASPRS The Imaging & Geospatial Information Society. An Honorary Member is identified as an individual who has rendered distinguished service to the Society and has attained distinction in advancing the science and uses of photogrammetry, remote sensing and related disciplines. Honorary Members are elected for life and do not exceed 25 in number at any given time.
Mikhail received his BS in Civil Engineering from Cairo University with distinction and first degree honors, and his MS and PhD from Cornell University, in photogrammetry and geodesy. He worked with private industry for over two years and with the US Geological Survey, and the former US Coast and Geodetic Survey (now National Geodetic Survey), for several summers. Mikhail taught at Cairo University for over two years, and taught and performed research at Purdue University for over 30 years. Currently, he is head of Geomatics Engineering in charge of an undergraduate program in Land Surveying Engineering and a graduate program in all areas of geomatics (photogrammetry, geodesy, GIS, etc.).
He was a visiting professor to the ITC, the Netherlands, and Stuttgart and Munich Universities, Germany, and visiting research scientist to TEC and DMA (Currently NIMA). He is proud and privileged to have served as major professor to some 25 PhD and 200 masters students.
During his tenure at Purdue, Mikhail has managed a budget of over $15 million for research sponsored by many diverse organizations. Currently, he is director of a $5 million ARO-sponsored research center, Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI), on Rapid and Affordable Generation of Terrain and Detailed Urban Feature Data.
Mikhail has authored or co-authored seven textbooks on photogrammetry, least squares adjustment, and surveying, and was an associate editor and contributing author to an exhaustive civil engineering handbook. He contributed chapters to seven other books and authored nearly 200 papers, reports and presentations, documenting the results of his research.
Founded in 1934, ASPRS is an international professional organization of 7,000 geospatial data professionals. ASPRS is devoted to advancing knowledge and improving understanding of the mapping sciences to promote responsible application of photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems and supporting technologies.
