CGIS Announces Research and Education
Awards for 2015
UCGIS top honors for Education and Research will go this year to Dr. Harvey Miller of The
Ohio State University and Dr. Shashi Shekhar of the University of Minnesota.
ASPRS Member Harvey Miller, the Bob and Mary Reusche Chair in Geographic
Information Science and Professor of Geography at The Ohio State University, will receive
the UCGIS 2015 Research Award. Dr. Miller has been a pioneer in research related to
space-time GIScience. He broke new ground with his 1991 paper on “Modeling accessibility
using space-time prism concepts within geographical information systems” (International
Journal of Geographical Information Systems, 5, 287-301), one of the very first papers to
link time geography with GIScience. It not only launched the contemporary era of ana-
lytical time geography, but also laid a solid theoretical and methodological foundation for
space-time GIScience.
Shashi Shekhar, the McKnight Distinguished University Professor in the Department
of Computer Science at the University of Minnesota, was singled out by UCGIS for the
Education Award. Dr. Shekhar has left a mark at every level of GIScience education.
Among his many achievements, Shashi recently co-developed and co-taught a massive
open online course (MOOC), titled “From GPS and Google Maps to Spatial Computing” on
Coursera. It attracted over 21,800 students from 182 countries. He’s leveraged numerous
service assignments and hundreds of speaking engagements to spread the word about
GIScience. He has mentored 75 graduate advisees, many of whom have risen to leadership
roles in academia, industry, and government.
