full accreditation in January 2013 - the only accredited full
certification program in the geospatial sciences.
Among the program modifications, the process for
recertification required that the peer review process be changed
from a ‘points-based’ system to professional development hours
(PDH) earned. PDH is clearly the accepted evaluation criteria
used in current certification programs. The ASPRS website has
a detailed matrix explaining the activities and PDH earned.
Certification of Lidar Practitioners
In response to the lidar practitioner community, the Committee
is in the process of developing certification for Certified
Mapping Scientist-Lidar and Lidar Technologist.
In keeping with the currently accepted methodology, the
Committee is following the DACUM (Development of a
Curriculum) process. The initial step is to develop a Body of
Knowledge (BoK) which is five/six short statements describing
the general knowledge required for the specialty area. Then,
to support each BoK item, specific tasks are identified that
describe performance (usually five/seven tasks). With an
acceptable BoK and Tasks, the development of assessment
items (i.e., exam questions) can be developed.
The final step is to conduct a ‘cut-score’ for the newassessment
items which is to have a small group of lidar practitioners
(professional and technologist) take the test, and then process
the results. The final exams for the lidar certification will also
have content for basic photogrammetry, remote sensing, and
GIS concepts.
The process for developing the BoK and Tasks is underway,
and some work on assessment items has been done based on
the
ASPRS Manual of Airborne Topographic Lidar
. The lidar
certifications are planned to be available in early 2015.
