Throughout my time as ASPRS Executive
Director, the role for which I felt the great-
est responsibility was as Publisher, both for
this
Journal
and for the numerous books and
manuals we have produced in the past nearly
16 years. All ASPRS publications are held in
high esteem by the geospatial community, and
we have worked continuously to ensure they
remain so. With that in mind, I want to take
this opportunity to reflect on the latest chang-
es we have implemented to improve
PE&RS
.
First, with this January issue, we have in-
stituted an updated electronic subscription for
individuals and extended that opportunity to institutions. Libraries can
now subscribe to this
Journal
through a site license that allows all autho-
rized users within their domain to access all current year, plus a mini-
mum of ten years’ worth of back issue material, during the subscription
period. By doing this, we expect
PE&RS
to have a much wider audience
throughout the vast educational and research communities.
Second, by extending our visibility online, we also expect the
Journal’s
impact factor will improve significantly as more and more users have
access to the peer-reviewed materials. An improved impact factor should
draw more articles of a high quality to
PE&RS
. Eventually, once we are
fully digital, we also anticipate being able to significantly expand the
number of pages and articles available in each issue.
Thirdly, we have begun assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) to
peer-reviewed papers published in
PE&RS
. The DOI is used to cite and
link to electronic documents, and consists of a unique alpha-numeric
character string which is assigned to a document by the publisher upon
the initial electronic publication. The assigned DOI never changes; there-
fore, it is an ideal mechanism for citing a document, particularly “Articles
in Press” that have not yet received their full bibliographic information.
Finally, ASPRS has now adopted an Open Access policy for authors
who wish to make their articles immediately available online, rather
than delaying public access to the article for the 24 months that we cur-
rently embargo the material. ASPRS has chosen to apply the “Gold road”
approach for open access, common in the community, which involves
the author paying the publisher an Article Processing Charge to make
the published version available through open access immediately. This
process utilizes a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license, which allows for
unrestricted reuse of content subject only to the requirement that the
source work is appropriately attributed. Such a license lets others modi-
fy, build upon and/or distribute the licensed work (including for commer-
cial purposes) as long as the original author is credited.
I trust you will find each of these changes positive as we work to
raise the level of awareness of
PE&RS
while continuing to provide the
highest quality publications to the geospatial information community. It
has been my pleasure to serve both as Publisher and ASPRS Executive
Director. I look forward to seeing you in the future in my most important
capacity--as an ASPRS member. Thank you for your support over these
past 16 years.
