ASPRS SEEKS NEW BOOK
REVIEW EDITOR
The Book Review Editor position for
Photogrammetric
Engineering and Remote Sensing
(PE&RS) is now open
with ASPRS looking to fill this area of responsibility
within the next few months. As book review editor for the
past five years I have enjoyed working with the PE&RS
volunteer reviewers, the PE&RS staff (Kim Tilley, Rae
Kelly, Dr. Russ Congalton), and the geospatial science
publishers within this community. For those of you
considering this position and the levels of effort required
I wanted to detail the primary responsibilities on a yearly
time-step:
1.
Acquire latest publications within the geospa-
tial arena. Every 6 months I contact the major
publishers of this literature. These publishers
will send me hardcover copies for review. I have
a current list of publishers and contacts so this
transition will be seamless.
2.
Send out a blanket call to experts in the field as
potential reviewers. ASPRS will broadcast my
‘reviewer calls’ to our society. Usually I get an
abundance of positive responses, many that I
place on a list for future reviews.
3.
Send out books and instructions to reviewers
(ASPRS will reimburse shipping costs).
4.
Provide grammatical and structural edits to the
reviews. Most of our reviews are very well written
and require very little change to the text.
5.
Submit reviews to PE&RS with both the editor’s
and reviewer’s concurrence
6.
At the beginning of the year, send PE&RS
published reviews to both the publisher and the
reviewer.
From my standpoint, I usually have a flurry of activity
twice a year. The entire process is not time consuming (I
published a number of peer reviewed articles last year
along with other responsibilities within my position). As
a bonus, reviews are currently in place to carry PE&RS
through August 2015.
If you are interested in this position, please send by email:
(1) a cover letter describing your interest and why you
are qualified for this position, and (2) a short (2-3 page)
resume to:
