In2011AgroupofASPRSmembers sawa trend inmembership
indicating a drop in members below the age of 35. The Young
Professional Council (YPC) formed with a primary “focus on
introducing young professionals to the profession of Remote
Sensing, Photogrammetry, and Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) within ASPRS, encourage active involvement
within the geospatial and imaging profession, and provide
opportunities for professional growth.” and aimed at member
with ten years or less of career experience. The Council was
re-named in 2015 and known today as the Early Career
professional Council.
The ECPC “will create additional value to the Society by
bridging the membership gap between Active Members, and
graduating Student Members or entry-level professionals.
Overall, it is anticipated that such efforts will encourage
expansion of membership in the thirty-five (35) year old or
less age group.”

The ASPRS ECPC has pioneered a mentoring program
focused on young professionals (post-students through age
35). After graduating college, individuals may no longer be
engaged in regular interaction in a scientific community
with structured milestones of achievement, working toward
goals. Additionally, they are faced with career choices and
challenges requiring informed decisions. The mentoring
program is designed to connect individuals with seasoned
professionals that can offer insights to help add context,
guidance and support to their professional development
efforts. Mentors sign up online to offer support in specific
areas of specialization, and mentees can reach out to the
mentors of their choice to begin the process, with ECPC
support along the way.

ASPRS as a geospatial society with national coverage, offers
regular conferences, educational and technical sessions,
networking opportunities throughout the year, and offers
accredited certification.
Through participation in ECPC, young professionals are
given that extra push to contribute and steer the society,
while they achieve milestones in certification requirements
and develop leadership skills that translate into a variety of
areas.
