RSAD NEWS — THE ASPRS REMOTE
SENSING APPLICATIONS DIVISION
Vision
Remotely-sensed imagery and geospatial information are accurately and ethically developed
and applied in decision making, education, and research.
Mission
To promote the development and application of remotely sensed imagery and geospatial
information to address issues, improve decision making, for use in education and research,
and to continue to grow and support the Vision of ASPRS.
Goals
• Assist in the development and maintenance of the Manual of Remote Sensing, with
focus being on applications
• Promote the ethical development and application of imaging and geospatial data
through outreach including
- Development and organization of content for the ASPRS Imaging and Geospatial
Technology Forum
- Identifying potential seminars and speakers for the ASPRS GeoBytes on-line seminars
- Maintain the ASPRS Division webpages
- Identify and assist in the development of special issues of PE&RS
• Develop Working Groups in topical areas of interest for the application of geospatial
information. These Working Groups will follow the Vision and Mission of RSAD and
ASPRS. Current working groups include:
- Marine Working Group
- Academic Engagement
- Climate Change
• Work towards growing and retaining the ASPRS member base
Below are the current and potential working groups with RSAD. We are actively seeking and
requesting your help in filling these working groups.
Marine Working Group
Contact John McCombs,
, for information on the Marine Working
Group. Chair and Assistant Chair positions are open.
Vision
— Increased awareness of remote sensing and geospatial information broadly applied
in furthering knowledge and understanding of the maritime domain and its relationship
with human activities.
Mission —
Promote, facilitate, and disseminate thinking and studies on marine applications
of remote sensing and geospatial analysis that contribute to information confidence and
decision advantage.
Definition —
The maritime domain is defined to include navigable inland waters
functionally contiguous to the marine environment of saline waters internal, inshore, and
offshore to coastal segments, and the oceanic waters. This broad spatial definition affords
comparability of islands and continents.
• Strategic Objective 1: identify ASPRS members and constituents interested in the
Working Group’s Vision and Mission and willing to participate in accomplishing its
objectives.
