August 2018 Special Issue Call for Papers
“Remote Sensing of Urban Environment”
Although only occupying a small proportion of Earth’s terrestrial surface, the
cities hold more than 50% of the world population and produce more than 90% of
the global economy. In the process of urbanization, some severe environmental
problems arise, such as urban congestion, air pollution, vegetation loss, water
contamination, and urban heat island, etc. In this context, monitoring and assessing
of urban environment are essential for urban planners and policy makers to better
manage and develop cities. Remote sensing techniques have been widely applied
in investigation of urban environment since it can offer a huge amount of Earth
Observation data at local, regional, and global scale. New and improved methods as
well as practicable applications related to urban environment are urgently needed
in order to facilitate the recognition of urban function.
This special issue will focus on the state-of-the-art and the newly developed
methodologies and applications for urban environment monitoring from the remote
sensing data. It is expected to bring together researchers from different fields to
present their promising achievements and discuss the future directions. Submissions
may address, but are not limited to the following topics:
Urban heat island
Urban air quality
Urban information retrieval (e.g., buildings, roads, impervious layer,
vegetation species)
Urban land cover/use mapping and updating
Urban climate change
Urban landscape and development pattern
Urbanization
Multisource (e.g. multi-angular, multi-temporal, multi-sensor) remote sensing
data fusion
New data and sensors for urban remote sensing (e.g. volunteered geographic
information)
Algorithms and techniques for interpreting urban remote sensing data (e.g.
machine learning)
Urban scene understanding and monitoring
We seek original and novel contributions on such topics. All submissions will be
peer-reviewed in line with
PE&RS
policy. Because of page limits, not all submissions
recommended for acceptance by the review panel may be included in the special
issue. Under this circumstance, the guest editors will select the most relevant
papers for inclusion in the special issue. Papers that are reviewed favorably, but
will not fit within the Special Issue, can be revised for publication consideration
in a future regular issue of
PE&RS
