SUMMER GREETINGS FROM THE ASPRS STUDENT
ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC)! WE ARE ON THE WAY TO A
STRONGER SAC!
W
e began by reevaluating our roles, duties, and more, in a similar
fashion to greater Society. During the 2014-2015 academic year, SAC
identified areas of improvement to build a stronger council. Through these
self-improvement projects, we seek to serve our ASPRS student members
better and more efficiently. SAC welcomes suggestions and comments
from both student and Early Career Professional (ECPC) members for
improvement.
This year, the existing procedures within the council were up-
dated. We created a web-based application for the SAC posi-
tions to streamline the application and review process. To help
incoming councilors understand expected roles and deadlines,
we encouraged the outgoing council members to document ex-
pected roles and tasks as well as existing projects. The Council
also organized several meetings to think through and discuss
our respective councilor duties and to propose changes and
ways to increase efficiency. We aim to build a stronger, more
cooperative and high-performing team to benefit student in-
volvement in ASPRS activities. A major change to the Council
is the revitalization of the SAC-ECPC Liaison Student Team.
This group of students and soon-to-be early career profession-
als will work with both councils to provide support and guid-
ance.
In addition, SAC is campaigning for incentives such as free
1-year membership for students who enroll in the Geospatial
Intern Program (GIP). Through the fundraising activities, we
were trying to support student activities and socials organized
for the national conferences. Finally, to enable the communi-
cation between the Council and student members, the ASPRS
SAC distribution email list (
was
created. Please save this email address to your contact list to
send us your questions, suggestions and comments, as well as
to receive communications from SAC in a timely manner.
Based on the comments and suggestions from the new deputy
councilors, the SAC also intends to re-energize the community
through the following projects:
1. Stronger social media presence through building better
communication networks
2. Improved student mentoring and career advice though
joint SAC-ECPC efforts
3. Building an optional Student Information Database to
help students to prepare for career goals
4. More communication between universities and regional
chapters
5. Stimulate increased engagement from students and
young professionals through innovation challenges, com-
petitions and hackathons during national conferences
If you have any suggestions or questions about the activities of
student advisory council, please contact us at
. We look forward to hearing from you!
