PHOTOGRAMMETRIC ENGINEERING & REMOTE SENSING
Making a Difference
While this online graduate-level credential in remote sensing
is new for Penn State, the university already offered numerous
online remote sensing courses to non-degree students seeking
professional development.
Cliff Holle of Trimble, a leading provider of advanced
location-based solutions, testified to the success of the Penn
State geospatial education program. “Over the past five to
six months, I have had an increasing number of Penn State
students come to me with high praise for the quality of the
remote sensing courses that they received,” he said. “They
ask me for the technical specifications required to move
the eCognition software used in class to their professional
projects. Their adoption of new techniques, processes, and
products is an excellent sign that their program is making a
difference in the way that geospatial professionals get their
jobs accomplished.”
Penn State’s remote sensing program operates on five
10-week terms. With two semesters slightly overlapping in
fall and spring, and one session in the summer, students
can complete the program at their preferred pace. Students
can schedule courses without any overlap, or take as many
courses as possible to finish the certificate in a year or less.
ASPRS Certification validates your professional practice and
experience. It differentiates you from others in the profession.

Once a student completes the Remote Sensing certificate,
their course creditsmay be applied to theMaster of Geographic
Information System (MGIS) or the Master of Professional
Studies in Homeland Security with Geospatial Intelligence
option (HLS-GEOINT). The remote sensing program will
also help prepare students for the GISP (GIS Professional),
ASPRS, and/or USGIF certification exams.
Current students and alumni who have successfully
completed one or more of the Penn State courses that make
up the certificate programmay be able to complete the remote
sensing credential with only a few additional courses.
Applications for the remote sensing program are accepted
on a rolling basis, so prospective students may apply at
any time. Visit
