free trials. In the meantime, we expect to see tutorials that
are friendly to mobile users, and potentially capable of re-
sponding to voice or eye-movement commands. We expect
more light versions of common geospatial analysis software
packages intended for mobile devices, and more specifically,
for distance -training purposes. Even thin-client applications
allowing access to specialized training material on a server
could be a first step forward.
Achieving these goals can not be realized without robust in-
volvement from the geospatial analysis software industry
guided and informed by a community of researchers, teach-
ers and practicioners. The majority of software companies
recognize and appreciate the value of training to complement
the utility of their products. They support the academic use
of their software packages through discounted licenses and
training material. However, facilitating training on mobile
devices is a paradigm that is yet to be widely implemented.
The increase in mobile device use (again thinking of e.g. the
time gains through technologies like autonomously driven ve-
hicles), promises not only significant growth in software us-
ers’ base, but also presents a revenue generation opportunity,
potentially through advertising. In my opinion, the geospa-
tial training community and software companies should be
looking for a new business model that paves the way for the
next generation of our mobile, geospatial analysis education
industry.
