PHOTOGRAMMETRIC ENGINEERING & REMOTE SENSING
Good morning everyone and thank you for coming to our session.
I am the new Chair of the Memorial Address Committee, and there
have been some changes to the program format this year as we are
restructuring our annual conferences. So before I begin my formal
presentation, I’d like to explain my vision of the Memorial Address,
why I took on this responsibility for the Society, and why I feel it
should have a permanent place in our conference program.
Many of you in the audience have known me since I joined ASPRS
as a student in 1990. It’s hard to believe that it has been 25 years! My
relationship with ASPRS has been one of the most enduring in my
adult life, and for me, as I’m sure for many of you in the audience,
it is much more than just “business.” As my own focus has shifted in
recent years, from practice to teaching, I not only continue to feel the
support of my mentors and friends from ASPRS, but I also feel the
need to facilitate this kind of connection for others who have more
recently joined or who are just discovering ASPRS and are becoming
leaders for the future.
The name of our organization includes the word “Society” for good
reason; we aremuchmore than an “Association” or an “Organization.”
We are a collection of individuals who share common ethics and
values that can’t be separated strictly into “professional” and
“personal” categories. We are a body of individuals living as members
of a community, a group with common interests that perceives itself
as distinct in some respect from the larger population (in this case,
the world of geospatial professionals) within which we exist.
