ANNOUNCING THE ASPRS RISINGSTAR PROGRAM
T
he Rising Star Program is a member sponsorship and mentorship program
being launched by ASPRS in 2017. The focus is on bringing students and
early career professionals to a next level of inclusion in work within ASPRS and
its Technical Divisions.
The Rising Star Program benefits
ASPRS, our corporate members,
and our individual members by
addressing several needs:
•
By acknowledging and encourag-
ing the work of young professional
ASPRS members in research and
applied technology to a broader
Geospatial community.
•
By bolstering private-sector
mapping companies; by the ad-
vancement of their participating
employees, who develop technical
knowledge and leadership skills to
become more effective contributors
to their companies.
•
By growing intergenerational
relationships and society cohesion
through financial support and men-
torship for participants by industry
leaders to advance their profession-
al development and deepen their
understanding of societal needs
and work.
•
By enriching our programs, serving
our members, and remaining cur-
rent and relevant in the advance-
ment of Geospatial science.

PROGRAM
Sponsors commit to support and mentor
the Rising Stars participants financially
through travel sponsorships, socially
through mentorship and academically
through meaningful society tasks and
positions. Rising Star participants com-
mit to active participation in an ASPRS
Technical Division and are expected to
take on a role as a Division or Regional
officer, committee or task force member,
or other task deemed important to the
Society to further its mission and vision
in the Geospatial community.
Any ASPRS member and/or group
of members can become a sponsor,
although, the program targets ASPRS
Corporate Members and ASPRS Regions
as the primary sponsorship sources.
Corporate members will benefit from the
program through advertising and mar-
keting options that ASPRS is designing
specifically for Rising Star sponsors and
from the advancement and recognition
of their employees within the geospatial
community. Regions will benefit from
the program through strengthening of
their student chapters, building of mem-
bership, and fostering new leadership.
Both students and early career profes-
sionals are the focus group for Rising
Star participants. Participants should be
ASPRS members who fulfill the require-
ments for being a student member or early
career professional (i.e., less than 5 years
professional experience) and have shown
initiative and or leadership in some aspect
of Society work. Rising Star participants
benefit by having expenses reimbursed
for travel and participation in the ASPRS
Annual Conference and the meetings of
the Technical Divisions. They are also
offered a unique opportunity for career
advancement through networking with
industry leaders, participating in on-site
training, and contributing to the science
and direction of the industry.
Most professional organizations at this
time realize how critical it is to remain
relevant to the younger generation of
mapping and geospatial practitioners.
There are many outlets available to young
professionals for career advancement
and for programs of learning, therefore
organizations such as ASPRS and many
others are taking active steps to develop
programs that provide value to the
student and early career professional
members.
