is the great American story of
innovation – not that of a single
inventor, but of teams of brilliant
men and women dedicated to
furthering science, engineering
and space technology for the good
of humankind.
It is a story about exploring and providing a solution
to the complex problem of understanding our Earth as
an interconnected system using solid science, incred-
ible feats of engineering, and the amazing teamwork of hundreds of dedicated
professionals.
The book moves smoothly between science, technology, and the political frame-
work – all three sometimes servings as boons, other times as roadblocks. It is a
fascinating read for anyone in the remote sensing field who lived through this era
of scientific and technological advancement. It provides a better understanding of
what went on behind the scenes, among the pioneers who advanced the field with
innovation, determination and brave advocacy. This is also a good read for anyone
currently in, or considering, the field, providing many valuable lessons -- from the
sensitive balance between government responsibility and commercialization to the
importance of scientific and engineering documentation. I am highly recommending
this book to anyone who loves science, engineering and history.-
