Aerosol Science: Technology and Applications
presents a
systematic review of aerosol science summarizing recent
advances of the subject with in-depth discussions on the
technological applications. The book begins with the definition
and the fundamental theories of aerosols, covering aerosol
chemical composition and its health impacts as well as aerosol
classification in order to provide the reader with a more
comprehensive understanding of aerosol science. The book
consists of 18 chapters covering different topics written by
scientists specializing in the specific topical areas. Topics covered
include aerosol modeling and measurements, satellite remote
sensing of aerosols, the effects of aerosols on climate change,
air pollution and human health, pharmaceutical aerosols and
pulmonary drug delivery, sources of aerosols (e.g., bioaerosols
and particle emissions from vehicles), hospital infections
from bioaerosols, the safety of emerging nanomaterials and
radioactive aerosols as the tracers of atmospheric processes.
The book is primarily intended for professionals, scientists, and
graduate students in climate science, meteorology, atmospheric
chemistry and/or relateddisciplines. The bookalso has numerous
maps, photographs, and diagrams printed in full color.
Following thedefinition, sizeandshapebasedclassification, and
physical and chemical components of aerosols in the Chapter one,
Chapter two presents the underlying theories of aerosol dynamics,
particle formation, nucleation, deposition, and resuspension
as well as equations related to particle size distribution and
deposition mechanisms. Chapters three through five introduce
guidelines for standard aerosol sampling, sampling strategy
and configurations; aerosol instrumentation related to sampling
aerosol inlets and transport, particle surface area measurement,
integral moment measurement, size distribution measurement
and chemical compositionmeasurement; deposition and filtration
mechanisms. In Chapter six, the authors take the reader through
concepts related to the retrieval of aerosol data (e.g., aerosol
optical depth, single scattering albedo, phase function) using
remote sensing, and follow with a comprehensive overview of
state-of-the-art algorithms, their capability for climate studies,
and future prospects toward the development of remote sensing
based aerosol observations. Different types of remote sensors and
data are explored in Chapter six as well as the potential of using
different wavelength spectrum (i.e., near-UV, VIS-NIR, active
LiDAR). Examples of applications given by the authors include
figure and charts of aerosol data from several remote sensing
sensors including AVHRR, MODIS, MISR, and CALIPSO.
Chapter eight provides the definition of nucleation, particle
formation, and growth, and suggests that sulfuric acid which is
formed via photo-oxidation of sulfur dioxide plays a crucial role in
atmospheric nucleation and new particle formation. The methods
of detecting atmospheric nanoparticles including particle
counting, electrostatic and mass spectrometric methods, and
aerosol impacts on climate are also presented in Chapter eight. In
addition to transportation problems due to reduced atmospheric
visibility, aerosol concentrations may change the incoming solar
radiation that reaches the earth’s surface causing both cooling
of the earth/atmosphere and warming the atmospheric layer
that absorbed the aerosol reside. Chapter nine investigates
the adverse health effects of aerosols summarizing the current
understanding and findings of the relationship between ultrafine
particles and public health issues. Additionally the role of particle
size distribution and its interaction mechanisms in human body
is discussed with case studies, diagrams, and figures. Chapter
10 focuses on the applications of aerosols in pharmaceutical
therapies, particularly, pulmonary drug delivery, optimizing
drug deposition, and mechanisms of drug absorption from the
lungs and activity in the lungs. In Chapters 10 through 14, the
authors present the importance of bioaerosols and discuss issues
related to infections in hospitals and the urban environment.
Also the authors summarize recent advances in aerosol science
and technology that regulate factors to control infections, aerosol
synthesis as an effective method for nanostructured materials,
