PHOTOGRAMMETRIC ENGINEERING & REMOTE SENSING
BOOK
REVIEW
Project 1 of Module 1, after instructing the student to perform
the task, in order to help the student understand what he
should be looking for from the LAS dataset build, statements
such as “Point spacing is an indication of how close the data
points are to each other..” explain Lidar point spacing so that
students who are not familiar with Lidar data can understand
the meaning of the numbers calculated in the statistics. When
introducing the interactive LAS Dataset toolbar, the authors
not only direct how to use each tool in the toolbar but also refer
to external resources for the subject matter. The well prepared
questions in the book along the instructions and worksheets
are relevant and play an important role in helping students
to think about processes while getting hands on experience so
they can learn beyond mere technical skills.
The instructions in the book are easy to follow as the authors
use accurate and precise technique language. The instructions
are given in an exact sequential order to perform analysis
according to the required procedures for implementing a GIS
analysis tool so that confusion is minimized. The screenshots
and pictures in the book successfully illustrate the related
geoprocessing results and how to use the tools. The book as
a whole is well designed. The colorful image of the Lidar map
on the cover highlights the topics of the book. The layout and
format of the each page are neatly organized with different
colors and fonts. Each of the modules and projects in the book
are in different colors, which not only make the book visually
pleasant but also help the reader to more easily follow the
contents of the book. The book is printed with high quality
paper.
In conclusion, this book is well written and reflects the
authors’ expertise and experience in the field. The materials
for the exercises are thoughtfully prepared. The instructions,
exercise data and worksheets combine to make the book an
efficient and complete workbook and reference for its audience.
Even though some minor errors were found, for example a
map document file name on page 71 appears to be mislabeled;
the book should prove very valuable to both the college student
and GIS professional who want to master geoprocessing Lidar
data skills in making important spatial decisions. With the
techniques and skills learned by following the instructions and
practices in the book, students should be able to perform Lidar
data analysis using ArcGIS analysis tools in the real world
with few barriers.
