sensed datasets. This ultimately will allow us to have a far
better understanding of the impacts of climate change on for-
est condition through time and across space. Su’s work exhib-
its the kind of innovation William Fischer would have wanted
recognized and the results of his dissertation research clearly
hold significant promise to better understand the impacts of
climate change and human activities on critical ecosystems.
Purpose:
The William A. Fischer Scholarship facilitates grad-
uate studies and career goals of a worthy student adjudged to
address new and innovative uses of remote sensing data and
techniques that relate to the natural, cultural, or agricultural
resources of the Earth. It was established in 1984.
Donor
: the ASPRS Foundation through individual and cor-
porate contributions in memory of William A. Fischer.
The William A. Fischer Memorial Scholarship consists of a
$2,000 check and a hand-engrossed certificate.
Leica Scholarship
Su Zhang
Su Zhang’s previously published works and current research
as a Ph.D candidate at the University of New Mexico embod-
ies the scholarship criteria for the application of photogram-
metry to real world techniques. Those works include:
Œ
Œ
Characterizing Pavement surface distress conditions
Œ
Œ
The accuracy of aerial triangulation products automat-
ically generated from hyper-spatial resolution digital
aerial photography
Œ
Œ
Assessment of methods for adjusting construction cost
estimates by geographical location
Additionally, Zhang’s stated goal to pursue a career in aca-
demia to teach a new generation of geospatial engineers fulfills
the scholarship’s goal of supporting the earth imaging industry.
Purpose:
The Leica Scholarship (formerly the Z/I Imaging
Award), is designed to facilitate graduate-level studies and
career goals adjudged to address new and innovative uses of
signal processing, image processing techniques, and the ap-
plication of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within
the earth imaging industry.
Donor:

The Leica Scholarship consists of a $2,000 cash prize and a
hand-engrossed certificate.
The Kenneth J. OsbornMemorial Scholarship
Stephen Castillo
Stephen Castillo is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree
in Geomatics Engineering from California State University
at Fresno, and plans to graduate in May of 2018.  Following
his BS, he would like to apply his outstanding scholarship
towards pursuit of a Master’s Degree at Purdue University.
Castillo exemplified the Osborn qualities of communication
and collaboration through leadership of activities within the
Fresno State campus community by serving as president of
the student chapter of ASPRS, and as an active member of
the student chapters of the California Land Surveyors Asso-
ciation and the National Society of Professional Surveyors.
Castillo is also editor of
Foresight
, the Geomatics Engineer-
ing program’s student newsletter. Castillo’s faculty advisor
is Professor Scott Peterson, PLS.
Purpose:
To encourage and commend college students who
display exceptional interest, desire, ability, and aptitude to
enter the profession of surveying, mapping, photogramme-
try, or geospatial information and technology. In addition,
the Award recognizes students who excel at an aspect of the
profession that Ken demonstrated so very well, that of com-
munications and collaboration.
Donor:
The ASPRS Foundation from funds donated by the
friends and colleagues of Kenneth J. Osborn. Recognized na-
tionally and internationally, Ken was an outstanding prac-
titioner of surveying, mapping, photogrammetry, and geo-
spatial information and technology, and a great friend of the
Society. As a professional cartographer with the U.S. Geo-
logical Survey, Ken made significant contributions to these
fields. The award was first offered in 2005.
The Award consists of a check in the amount of $2,000, an en-
grossed certificate and a membership renewal in the Society,
(L-r) Stephen Castillo and Charles Toth.
